University Teaching Fellow, 01-02
Karl Guillard, Ph.D

Associate Professor, Agronomy

Dr. Guillard recieved his B.S. from Pennsylvania State University, and both his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. He joined the University of Connecticut in an instructional capacity in 1986.

As Associate Professor of Agronomy in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Guillard teaches courses and mentors students on both the undergraduate and graduate level. In response to student interest and a general increase in recreational turf sports, he took the initiative to develop the Turfgrass Science program in the Department of Plant Science. Not only did Dr. Guillard develop two new courses and co-develop a third without any formal training, but he also invested the time and effort to increase his undergraduate advising during this intense process. His teaching is known for its variety and this makes him a valued member of his department. Dr. Guillard reinforces his lectures using multiple medias-- from using overheard projectors and PowerPoint presentations to bringing guest lecturers into the classroom-- to help students to understand first-hand what their professional careers may entail. He consistently gives students the opportunity to contribute to the course while at the same time broadening their skills and knowledge. His dedication to his students pays off in the form of glowing recommendations from students, as well as respect and admiration from students and colleagues. For his innovative and energetic teaching, Dr. Guillard previously received the Donald M. Kinsman Award for Excellence in CANR/RHSA Undergraduate Teaching by Junior Faculty from UConn’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
