The development of assessment and evaluation strategies is a major component of the work we do at the IDD unit of ITL.
Student assessment for courses we help faculty to design, often includes the traditional quizzes, mid-terms and finals. These after careful consideration, are left for the faculty member to create and administer. There are also several instances where student portfolios have been included in a designed course to assess students. This form of assessments complies more closely with a constructivist, student centered model of learning, which is the theoretical optic that informs our design process.
The instructional design process is a "front-end analysis" for course design. In addition to this, we undertake a "back-end analysis” which measures the design of a course in fulfilling its course objectives. This typically consists of initial, formative and summative surveys to be completed by the students taking the course. The data collected is analyzed and used as feedback to improve the course. Thus, the process we use for course redesign is an iterative one.
We have also been involved in helping faculty develop surveys to collect data that can help them enhance students’ learning experiences.
