Hi-Tech Classroom Updates

Fall 2007

The summer of 2007 has seen significant changes in many of the Hi-Tech Classrooms on the Storrs campus, specifically to the PCs provided in the rooms.  The changes are as follows:

  1. For security reasons the standard user account, known as the classroom account, now requires a password.  Please read both the legal text notification and the logon text area as these areas mention pertinent information about the use of and access to the classroom PCs.
  2. ITL no longer supports 3.5-inch floppy discs; no new classroom PCs will contain floppy drives.
  3. Since the classroom PC is available to anyone with a password, we suggest transporting data via CD or USB key (aka Flash drive or Thumb drive). Accessing information in this way provides complete data security.
    1. Note: FTP services are still available for moving data, though the WS FTP program will be removed from the PC since the desktop contains a shortcut for the Server Scratch Drive.
  4. Access to Novell servers (via Network Neighborhood) is no longer supported as IPX traffic is no longer routed across campus. Suggested workarounds include using the available file storage methods (FileZilla and WS FTP), Remote Desktop, CD, or USB Key.
  5. All data saved onto the PC itself should be saved to the D: drive (aka the Local Scratch Drive).  Nightly reboots of classroom PCs erase data saved anywhere else on the PC.

If you wish to utilize the Remote Desktop feature in a Hi-Tech Classroom, your remote PC must be properly set up to receive the request. Please contact your local computer administrator or the ITS Helpdesk (486-4357) to verify that your PC is set up properly.  We strongly suggest you perform a “dry run” before class time.

Please direct any questions, concerns, or comments to the AVT Helpdesk at 486-1774.
